Soil Testing KitSoil Testing

North Carolina offers free soil sampling to residents. Not only does sampling your soil help prevent excess fertilizer and pesticides from running into our waters, using the recommended amount often saves homeowners and applicators money. Detailed analysis conducted by the NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services Agronomic Services, analyzes characteristics including:

  • levels of major plant nutrients, including phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium & sulfur;

  • levels of plant micronutrients, including copper, manganese & zinc;

  • levels of sodium;

  • pH and acidity;

  • soil class;

  • percent base saturation;

  • percent humic matter;

  • cation exchange capacity and

  • weight-to-volume ratio.

Recommendations can:

  • optimize crop yields,

  • improve farm efficiency,

  • reduce cost of production,

  • conserve natural resources and

  • protect the environment by minimizing excessive use of fertilizers, particularly nitrogen.

Soil testing kits can be picked up at your local Cooperative Extension office or at Stormwater SMART outreach events. For more information, please visit the Agronomic Services website.
